An integrator optical system includes first and second lens plates whose positions are capable of fine adjustment. By performing such fine adjustment, the forming position of the illumination range can be adjusted to be positioned so as to include the image forming range. Accordingly, there is no need to provide a wide margin around the image forming range. Thus, usage effectiveness of the illumination light can be increased, thereby improving the brightness of the projected image.
