An ophthalmic solution for treating corneal edema concurrent with epithelial discontinuity, healing epithelial defects, and protecting against epithelial trauma containing electrolytes at only isotonic levels but containing hydrophilic macromolecules at such concentration that their colloidal osmotic pressure is equal or greater that the imbibition pressure of corneal stroma.
