Method for making 5-membered ring compounds containing N, 0 or S atoms by reacting certain (thio)cyanate or cyanamide salts with compounds having NH 2 , OH or SH functionality vicinal to an-NH 2 group, in the presence of an acid except where said cyanate is an ammonium salt.
