A herbicidal composition which comprises as an active ingredient a trifluormethanesulfonanilide of the formula:
wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and are each independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group, a C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl group, a C 3 -C 4 alkenyl group, a C 3 -C 5 alkynyl group, a C 1 -C 4 alkoxy group, a C 6 -C 7 aralkyl group, a C 1 -C 4 alkoxy(C 1 -C 4 )alkyl group or a C 2 -C 4 acyl group or taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a morpholino group and X is a hydrogen atom a C 2 -C 4 acyl group, provided that R 3 and R 4 are not both hydrogen.
