A butterfly valve assembly and method of making the same are provided wherein such valve assembly has a valve body structure (31) and a closure structure (35) and is provided with a device (135) for locking, in its closed position, a shaft assembly (38) which is used to operate the closure structure (35). Heat exchange means may be disposed in the outer periphery of the closure structure (35) for controlling the temperature thereof.
