The invention provides a method of controlling perennial weeds with the aid of N-(pyrazolylalkyl)-N-(5-pyrimidinyl)-chloroacetamide compounds of formula I

R, is a N,N-disubstituted amino group, R 2 is halogen, C 1-4 alkyl, or an ether or thio ether group, R 3 is 1-pyrazolyl or 3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl, and A is CH 2 or CH(CH 3 ),
in free base form or in agriculturally acceptable acid addition salt form, herbicidal compositions comprising such compounds and certain novel compounds belonging to the general class of compounds of formula I and which are particularly suitable for use in the method of the invention.
