A method for inhibiting the formation and deposition of fouling materials during the basic washing of hydrocarbons contaminated with oxygenated compounds characterized by performing the wash of the hydrocarbon in the presence of sufficient amount for the purpose, of hydroxylamine, or a hydrocylamine acid salt or mixtures thereof.
