Synthetic peptides corresponding to regions of immunologically reactive proteins of HIV-1 are provided. The peptides which are immunologically reactive with HIV-1 specific antibodies are useful in assays for detection of HIV-1 infection or exposure and in compositions to elicit the production of antibodies against HIV-1 in animals including man.
