A recording material comprises a layer which con­tains a leuco dye on a support. The leuco dye has the formula (I):
in which each of R¹ and R² independently is an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group, or R¹ and R² may form, together with the neighboring nitrogen atom, a heterocyclic ring; R³ is a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group or an aryloxy group; R⁴ is an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; R⁵ is a halogen atom, an acyloxy group, an acyl group, carbamoyl, sulfamoyl, an alkylsulfonylamino group, an arylsulfonyl­amino group, an acylamino group, amino, hydroxyl, nitro, cyano, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryloxy­carbonyl group, an alkylsulfonyl group or an arylsulfonyl group; each of R¹, R², R³, R⁴ and R⁵ may have one or more substituent groups; m is 0 or 1; n is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5; and when n is 2, 3, 4 or 5, the groups represented by R⁵ may be different from each other.
