A sunscreen composition comprises a carrier and 0.1 to 5% by weight of specified substituted naphthalenylidenes which act as UV filters. The naphthalenylidene, is an optionally substituted naphthalenone or a derivative thereof, such as 4,4,7-trimethyl-4,4a,5,6-tetrahydro-2(3H)-naphthalenone or diethyl-4,4,7-trimethyl-4,4a,5,6-tetrahydro-2(3H)-naphthalenylidene malonate.
