A device for holding in place a workpiece or a piece to be measured comprises at least one fixed guide rail having at least one side slot, as well as various kinds of detachable fittings which slide in said slot such as detachable back stops or links for connecting sliding rails to the guide rail. Said fittings have fingers (9) which are shaped so that they can move transversally in and out of a slot (5) formed in a rail (1), slide easily along said slot, and be accurately locked in place in the slot when a pushing force is applied to the fittings to push the fingers (9) against an oblique bearing surface (23) on one of the rims of the slot. This pushing force is applied by driving in a screw (12). A fixed stop (10) cooperates with the movable finger (9) in order to be pushed against the lower rim of the slot (5). The stop (10) and the body of the fitting are simultaneously supported by the lower face and the side face (21) of the rail (1). The finger (9) can move transversally in and out of the slot (5) or slide freely in it before the screw (12) is driven.
