A liquid crystalline medium based on a mixture of moderately polar compounds contains one or more compounds of general formula (I), where the individual residues have the following meanings: R stands for alkyl, oxalkyl, fluoralkyl or alkenyl, each of which has up to 7 carbon atoms, (a) stands for (b), (c) or (d), X stands for F, Cl, CF3, OCHF2, OCF2Cl or OCF3, and Y stands for H or F.
