An ear tag comprises a first button (2) having an aperture (5), a pin (3) having a head (6) and a heel (4) and being attached to the first button (2) via engagement of the heel (4) in the aperture (5) prior to application of the tag to an animal, and a second button (7) which is separate from the pin (3) prior to application of the tag, the second button (7) having an aperture (8) in which the head (6) is engaged on application of the tag. At least one of the buttons (2, 7) has an additional ring (8) via which the pin (3) engages the said button (2, 7).
