A liquid heating vessel such as a hot water jug (1, 100), comprises a boiling control (7, 103) for disconnecting the power to an element of the jug when water in the vessel boils and a selectively operable thermally-sensitive control (20; 110) for disconnecting the power when the water is at a lower temperature, say 80°C. In one embodiment, the thermally-sensitive control is arranged in the base unit (2) of a cordless jug, and is moved selectively towards and away from the base of the jug (1) so as to render it operative and inoperative. In another embodiment, the thermally-sensitive control (110) is mounted to, and shares certain components with the boiling control (103). An actuator (119) of the thermally-sensitive control is connected to an over-centre lever (101) of the boiling control by a linkage comprising a lever (114) which is selectively pivotable about an axis P in dependence upon the position of a control slide member (123).
