A dental testing composition comprising 5 to 45 wt.% of reduced malt sugar syrup, 5 to 30 wt.% of sorbitol, 10 to 40 wt.% of palatinose, 5 to 20 wt.% of water, 5 to 37 wt.% of a component selected from the group consisting of gelatin, starch and pectin, and 0.1 to 10 wt.% of a detecting reagent selected from the group consisting of glucose, vitamins, amino acids, pigments, inorganic salts and other physiologically safe substances. The masticating function of a subject can be examined by making the subject masticate this composition and determining the detecting reagent which has migrated into the saliva.
