A catalyst for reducing NO x in automotive exhaust gases, which is formed of a copper-aluminum composite oxide and which exhibits two peaks in the X-ray spectrum corresponding to interplanar spacings of approximately 0.2 nm and approximately 0.28 nm. This composite oxide exhibits high NO x conversion and superb heat resistance, though its crystal structure is not known yet.
