A monoazo compound represented by the general formula (I):
wherein D is an optionally substituted phenyl or an optionally substituted naphthyl;
R and R 1 are hydrogen or an optionally substituted lower alkyl; A is a naphthylene represented by the general formula (A1):
m 1 and m 2 are 0 or 1; Y is an aliphatic connecting group represented by the general formula (Y1), (Y2) or (Y3):
Z is -CH=CH 2 or -CH 2 CH 2 Z 1 in which Z 1 is a group removable by the action of an alkali;
X is a group represented by the general formula (X1), (X2), (X3) or (X4) :
-OR 8 (X3)
-SR 9 (X4)
and a method for dyeing or printing fiber materials using the monoazo compound.
