A device is disclosed for winding coils for electric machines, in particular those having a high number of poles or a distributed winding. A rotary flyer (14) generates on a template coil windings that are removed by a lifter. In order to obtain a as short as possible connection between poles when winding coherent coils, the template is provided with at least one circumferential recess or with a parting line (13) into which pliers (26) for holding the wire during winding may be inserted. In order to obtain coils with end sections of a determined length, the wire (34) is clamped by the pliers (26) between the flyer (14) and the template and is then drawn out to a clamping and cutting device (44, 46) by a gripper (42).
