Described is a precision drill (1), designed for drilling noncircular bores, which has a bit (3) on a shaft (2) plus a holder (6) for the workpiece being drilled, the aim being to provide a drill which can operate economically at high speeds. To this end, the workpiece holder (6) oscillates translationally in at least one direction at a frequency determined by the speed of the bit, the holder moving along a path determined by the shape of the bore to be drilled.
