The invention concerns an optically controllable microelectrode arrangement for stimulating cells (27), in particular a retina implant. This arrangement comprises a surface (28) abutting a tissue, for example a retina (12), containing the cells (27). The surface (28) is provided with electrodes (35a) for stimulating tissue cells (27). The electrodes (35a) are controlled by light (21, 22) impinging on the tissue such that the electrode (35a) exerts an electrical stimulus (41) on the cell (27). The surface (d) of the electrode (35a) used for contact with a cell (27) is substantially smaller than the surface (B) of the cell (27) used for contact with the electrode (35a).
