The invention relates to an actuating drive for a valve of an internal combustion engine in which a lever which is actuated is pivotally mounted and rests on the valve stem directly or via a force transmitting element. The area of action of the lever on the stem lies outside of the effective range of the electromagnets, the armature represents only a portion of the pivotal lever, and the valve stem comprises an alternative element for a portion of the valve stem beyond the axis of the valve.
