Disclosed is an electromagnetic actuator which drives the valve of an internal combustion engine. An armature is controlled by means of magnetic force in conjunction with oppositely directed spring forces. The movement of the armature is transmitted to the valve stem by means of a valve compensating element. Said hydraulic backlash compensating element is arranged directly on the armature and is preferably connected to a pressure source by means of a flexible line.
