The invention relates to a method for the production of polyisobutenylphenoles by alkylation of an aromatic hydroxy compound with substantially singly ethylenically unsaturated and substantially homopolymer polyisobutenes in the presence of a Lewis-acid alkylation catalyst, characterised in that, ether is used as an additional co-catalyst, whereby in the case of BF3 the ether has a molecular weight as a Lewis-acid of at least 102 g/mol.
