A method of making duplicate keys (22) employs the use of a scanning device (100) for capturing the physical profile of a master key (10) or alternately, formulating the profile as a data construct without the use of a master key (100). This data construct can be assigned a unique code and stored on a database (20) for later retrieval. Once the key profile has been captured or formulated in a data base memory device (20), a key may be fabricated without the need for traditional key blanks using profile data, for example, a modeling device etc. A milling device (30) in conjunction with a metal slug can duplicate the key. An injecting molder (300) using high density molding resin can be used to construct the duplicate key (22).
