The invention relates to a method for producing a multicolor image. To this end, a transfer film is preferably used, which has a laser-sensitive layer (4). The laser-sensitive layer (4) is made from a mixture consisting of three constituents. The constituents are coloring agents, especially pigments, e.g. cyan pigment, magenta pigment and yellow pigment, which can be decolorized by laser radiation. According to the method, only one of the pigment constituents is decolorized at a time in the individual steps by setting laser conditions that are specific to each of the different pigment components. This means that by treating a specified location with a laser, only a first constituent of the mixture comprised of three constituents is decolorized by laser irradiation in a first step. In a possible second step, only one other constituent is decolorized and in a possible third step, only one third constituent is decolorized. The color at the relevant location is produced by the subtractive mixture of colors of the remaining constituents that have not been decolorized.
