The invention relates to an agent for treating surfaces, especially medical instruments, which is obtained by radiating an aqueous solution with artificial ultraviolet rays. Said aqueous solution contains a chemical disinfectant, for example peracetic acid, optionally in conjunction with corrosion inhibitors, buffer components, complexing agents, wetting agents and/or other auxiliary or active substances. Various sterilization methods are also disclosed.
