The invention relates to a method for triggering at least one airbag in a vehicle, whereby at least two criteria are used to decide to ignite the second stage of a two-stage airbag. To this end, variables derived from measuring signals of an acceleration sensor are used as criteria. Said variables must exceed threshold values within pre-determined periods of time in order to trigger an ignition decision. The criteria are selected according to the type of vehicle. Characteristic curves are used as threshold values. Said characteristic curves can optionally be modified according to the change in a seat belt.
