A video display apparatus includes a brightness signal processing circuit, a color difference signal processing circuit, an RGB matrix circuit, a CRT drive circuit, a CRT, a plurality of VM coils, a plurality of scan rate modulating circuit blocks, a horizontal deflection circuit, a vertical deflection circuit, a horizontal deflection coil, and a vertical deflection coil. Electron beams generated and directed into the CRT by the CRT drive circuit are caused, by horizontal and vertical deflection coils, to perform horizontal and vertical scans. The plurality of scan rate modulating circuit blocks provide rate modulation currents to the plurality of VM coils, whereby the plurality of VM coils generate rate modulation fields to provide local rate modulations to the horizontally scanning electron beams.
