The invention relates to a method and a device for limiting the driving speed of a motor vehicle, which permit an adjustable steady fuel consumption to be maintained for a distance that has been covered, without limiting short-term acceleration. According to said method, the driving speed is limited to a maximum value (vmaxbe), at which a maximum fuel consumption (Besoll) that has been predefined for a steady driving speed is not exceeded.
