The invention relates to a device for placing a stamped rivet into sheet metal, comprising an upper bushing into which a stamp can be displaced, a fixed lower bushing which is disposed at a distance from the upper bushing and which receives the shank of the stamped rivet during the stamping-in process, also comprising a spring collet which is elastically pre-tensed, surrounds the lower bushing and protrudes above said bushing in the direction of the stamp, acting as a bearing for the sheet metal which is to be joined to the stamped rivet or joined thereby. The stamp, lower bushing and spring collet, are configured in such a way that when the rivet is stamped in, a peripheral groove is formed in the shank thereof directly below the head with a thickened cylindrical shank section (30) disposed in an adjacent position thereto, whereby sheet metal, which is stamped through by the stamped rivet during the fixing process and is forced downwards, is plastically deformed into the peripheral groove.
