An apparatus for treating sludge comprises a press (3) for dewatering the sludge, a compaction device (10) for receiving and compacting sludge dewatered by the press, a shredder (23) for receiving and shredding sludge compacted by the compaction device, and a tube conveyor (30) for conveying shredded sludge from the shredder. As a result, it is possible to dewater the sludge to a high degree of dryness at the same time as the dewatered sludge can be transported in the tube conveyor over considerable distances and at any inclination to the horizontal.
