The invention relates to a tool (102, 202, 302, 402, 502) for machining materials in a rotating manner, comprising at least one elongate cutting chamber (112, 212, 312, 412, 512) which is arranged on the peripheral side (106, 206, 306, 406, 506) of the tool (102, 203, 302, 402, 502). A plurality of cutting elements (118a-h, 218a-h, 318a-e, 418a-e) are arranged in the cutting chamber (112, 212, 312, 412, 512) or adjacent thereto. The tool (102, 202, 302, 402, 502) inscribes upon an enveloping surface (102, 220, 320, 420, 422) when rotated. The cross-section (130, 132; 230, 232; 330, 332; 430, 432),which is defined by the surface of the cutting chamber (112, 212, 312, 412, 512) and the enveloping surface (120, 220, 320, 420, 422), has different dimensions along the path of the cutting chamber (112, 212, 312, 412, 512) in relation to the height of different cutting elements (118a-h, 218a-h, 318a-e, 418a-e).
