The invention relates to a method for producing, in essence, enantiomer-pure 3-hydroxycarboxylic acids or esters of general formula (III) by reacting racemic oxetan-2-ones of general formula (I) with compounds R3-OH of general formula (II) in the presence of a lipase from Candida antarctica or Burkholderia plantarii, and separating the obtained products of formula (III) and (IV) from one another, and the radicals have the following meanings: R1, R2 and R3, independent of one another, represent H, C1-C10-substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, and substituted or unsubstituted aryl or hetaryl, whereby R1 and R2 cannot have the same meaning at the same time.
