The invention relates to a method for carrying out gear shifts from a source gear to a target gear of a twin clutch transmission, the twin clutch transmission comprising a plurality of gears distributed between two transmission input shafts. Sequentially directly successive gears are associated with different transmission input shafts, especially the first, third and/or fifth gears are associated with the first transmission input shaft and the second, fourth and/or sixth gears are associated with the second transmission input shaft. For each possible sequential gear change, respectively one upshifting threshold and downshifting threshold defined according to the position of the accelerator pedal, namely the limiting value for each upshifting or downshifting is stored in a control appliance as a corresponding vehicle speed value. When the motor vehicle is moving, varying vehicle speeds and the varying position of the accelerator pedal are measured. Indirect gearshifts are thus avoided by the fact that, in the event of a nominal downshifting from a source gear to a lower gear, the target gear is determined by first comparing the actual driving speed with the limiting value of the closest downshifting threshold or the adjacent downshifting threshold in said downshifting direction, until the actual driving speed is higher than the respective limiting value with the last checked downshifting threshold. Furthermore, when, for the last checked downshifting threshold, the higher gear of said downshifting threshold is associated with the same transmission input shaft as the source gear, the actual vehicle speed is then compared with the threshold value of the upshifting threshold corresponding to the last checked downshifting threshold, and then, when the actual vehicle speed is higher than the limiting value of the upshifting threshold, the higher gear of said upshifting threshold is selected as a target gear, but when the actual vehicle speed is lower than the limiting value of the upshifting threshold, the lower gear of said upshifting threshold is selected as a target gear.
