The invention relates to a method for producing a photochromic plastic article, comprising the steps: (a) applying a layer comprising monomers, which are suited for forming a polymer, in liquid form and at least one photochromic colorant to at least one area of the inner surface of a first casting mold (GF1), which is situated in a casting packet, and partially or completely hardening the layer while forming a photochromic polymer layer (3); (b) optionally applying a protective layer (2) to the partially or completely hardened photochromic polymer layer (3) and hardening the protective layer (2); (c) pouring a casting resin (1) into the casting packet, which comprises the first casting mold (GF1) that, together with a second casting mold (GF2), forms a predetermined cavity inside the casting packet, and; (d) hardening the casting resin (1) while forming a photochromic plastic article. The invention also relates to a photochromic plastic article that can be obtained by using this method.
