The present invention relates to a method of producing quaternary ammonium salts represented by the formulae (I), (II) or (III).
(wherein, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represent long-chain alkyl groups, etc. having total carbon atoms of 8 to 40, which may be intersected by an ether group, an ester group or an amide group; R 4 represents an alkyl group, etc. having carbon atoms of 1 to 6, and X - represents an anionic group), by reacting a tertiary amine of a specified formula with a quaternizing agent in at least one aprotic solvent selected from specified solvents.
