The invention provides a process for preparing copolymers comprising vinyl ester and ethylene or ethylenically unsaturated monomers by aqueous free-radical polymerization at a pressure of 5 to 100 bar absolute by the emulsion or suspension polymerization process, characterized in that, on completion of the polymerization, the reaction mixture is decompressed to a pressure of 0.1 to 5 bar absolute, and the unconverted monomers are recovered from the residual gas by multistage fractional deep-cooling condensation.
