A railway crossing comprises a base (9), four rail support arms (12, 13, 16, 17), a rail crossing bar (29), and a displacement means (30) for displacing the rail crossing bar (29) between the first and second positions. The first and second rail support arms (12, 13) converge from an entrance aperture (14) for receiving first and second inbound rails (22, 23) to a waist (15). The third and fourth rail support arms (16, 17) diverge from the waist (15) away from the entrance aperture (14) to an exit aperture (18) for receiving first and second outbound rails (31, 32). The arms (12, 13, 16, 17) define a long axis extending from the entrance aperture (14) to the exit aperture (18) through the waist (15). Each arm (12, 13) is parallel to the arm (16, 17) on the opposite side of the waist (15) and long axis. The rail crossing bar (29) is received at one end in the waist (15) and is free to be pivoted about the waist (15) between the first and second positions where it abuts the first and second arms (12, 13) respectively.
