An image forming apparatus (100) includes a unit (10Y), a mark detector (103Y), and a controller (200). The unit is attachable to and detachable from the image forming apparatus and includes an information mark pattern (102Y) indicating predetermined information. The mark detector detects the information mark pattern. The controller obtains the information indicated by the information mark pattern based on a detection result provided by the mark detector.
