According to the invention, an actual evaporator chamber temperature value TVDKIst is adjusted to a target evaporator chamber temperature value TVDKSoll after the burner is started, namely by varying the amount of air supplied to the burner, which is carried out by means of controlling a rotational speed D of the fan according to a function D = f(TVDKIst). Ideal evaporation of the heating oil is achieved by the control according to the invention. This prevents carbon build-up residue of the heating oil in the evaporator chamber. Furthermore, trouble-free burner operation is achieved over a long period of use by means of the invention, according to which the imission threshold values are adhered to.
