A pneumatic radial ply tire (10) comprising a bead (14) with an associated chafer (28); a carcass ply (12) folded about the bead (14) so as to define a main body portion (16) and a turnup portion (18) associated with the bead (14); a tread (24) disposed radially outward from the carcass ply (12), the tread (24) having a shoulder portion disposed at axial outer edges of the tread (24); and a sidewall (26) extending radially outward from the chafer (28) to a location adjacent the shoulder portion, the sidewall (26) being disposed axially outward of the carcass ply (12); wherein the sidewall (26) comprises a first outer layer (51) extending from the chafer (28) to the shoulder portion and a second inner layer (52) extending from the chafer (28) to the shoulder portion, the second inner layer (52) being disposed entirely between the carcass ply (12) and first outer layer (51), the second inner layer comprising a foamed structure of a rubber composition having a density ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 g/cm 3 .
