The invention relates to a method for operating gas discharge lamps (3) comprising a temperature-dependent characteristic current/voltage curve U(I). The method is characterized in that, in order to prevent an unstable operation at low external temperatures, the exceeding of a prescribed maximum value of the lamp operating voltage or a gradient value thereof is prevented by increasing the lamp current.
