The invention relates to the use of polyelectrolyte complexes, particularly those which are formed from anionic polymers and cationic polymers, as plasticizer barriers. The invention also relates to plasticizer-containing substrates and the production thereof, wherein the plasticizer-containing substrates are coated with at least one coating that has at least one polyelectrolyte complex.
