The invention relates to a method for setting the working pressure of a transmission, in particular a motor vehicle transmission, the transmission having clutches, brakes, actuators, a hydrodynamic coupling and/or a hydrodynamic converter, to which a medium carrying the working pressure can optionally be supplied in order to vary the transmission ratio of the rotational speed and/or the torque between a transmission input shaft and a transmission output shaft by opening and closing the clutches and/or brakes, by operating actuators and/or by hydrodynamic transmission of power by using the hydrodynamic coupling and/or the hydrodynamic converter, it being possible for the working pressure to be switched between a constant nominal value and a constant lowered value that is smaller relative thereto, or for the working pressure to be reduced from the nominal value to a lowered value in three or more stages or continuously. The invention is characterized in that a difference in rotational speed between the transmission input shaft and the transmission output shaft and/or between the input side and output side of at least one clutch, brake, the hydrodynamic coupling and/or the hydrodynamic converter is detected and compared with a predefined intended difference, and the switching or reducing of the working pressure is carried out as a function of the result of the comparison.
