A method and apparatus comprising a tracking system (108) and a controller (110) in communication with the tracking system (108). The tracking system (108) is configured to identify characteristics about a group of portable machines (112) configured to perform a number of manufacturing operations on a workpiece (102). The controller (110) is configured to control performance of the number of manufacturing operations on the workpiece (102) using the characteristics about the group of portable machines (112) identified using the tracking system (108).
