The invention relates to a method and device for diagnosing a switchable coolant pump (2) for circulating a coolant in a coolant circuit (3) of an internal combustion engine (1), wherein an actual value of the cylinder head temperature (19) of the internal combustion engine (1) is detected and wherein the actual value of the cylinder head temperature (19) is compared with a model value of the cylinder head temperature (26) and the functionality of the coolant pump (2) is assessed according to the comparison result (29) or (30).
