The invention relates to a combined service and parking brake cylinder (1), containing a service brake chamber (6), which is delimited by a diaphragm (10), which actuates a brake mechanism against the effect of a return spring (14) via a thrust rod (18), and a parking brake cylinder (4) with a control chamber (49) for controlling an interlockable parking brake piston (30). The service brake chamber (6) is formed between the one diaphragm (10) and a further diaphragm (22), which is connected to the parking brake piston (30) and can be moved together therewith in the brake engaging and brake disengaging direction, wherein, upon the service brake being requested, the control chamber (49) of the parking brake piston (30) is pressurised in order to bring the parking brake piston (30) together with the diaphragms (10, 22) into an air clearance overshoot position, and the parking brake piston (30) is then interlocked in the air clearance overshoot position, and the service brake chamber (6) is then pressurised in order to actuate the one diaphragm (10) relative to the further diaphragm (22) in the brake engaging direction, thereby generating the service brake force.
