The invention relates to a method for producing a compound of formula (I), comprising the reaction, in the presence of a catalytic system comprising a single rare earth oxide or a mixture of rare earth oxides, of an alkyl carbonate or an alkylene carbonate with a polyol of formula (II), wherein p is a whole number between 2 and 10.
