A wireless communication device monitors a paging channel using an extended monitoring window, that includes one or more paging blocks in addition to a nominal paging block associated with the wireless communication device, and a long paging cycle, having a longer periodicity than supported by a legacy paging cycle, if a response message from a core network node indicates that the core network node supports the extended monitoring window and the long paging cycle. The wireless communication device monitors the paging channel using a non-extended monitoring window, that includes the nominal paging block and excludes the additional paging blocks, and the long paging cycle, if the response message does not indicate that the core network node supports the extended monitoring window but indicates that the long paging cycle is supported. The wireless communication device monitors the paging channel using the non-extended monitoring window and the legacy paging cycle, if the response message does not indicate that the core network node supports the extended monitoring window and does not indicate that the long paging cycle is supported.
