A camera for detecting wireless devices, the camera comprising a processor and a non transitory computer-readable storage medium containing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the camera to: configure the camera to operate as a wireless access point; determine the availability of one or more wireless devices configured to operate as wireless stations; configure the camera to operate as a wireless station; and determine the availability of one or more wireless devices configured to operate as wireless access points, wherein the camera is configured to operate as a wireless station in response to a determination by the camera that no wireless devices configured as wireless stations are available.
